SAOGA Oil, Gas and Energy Outward Mission to Mozambique

SAOGA Oil, Gas and Energy
Outward Mission
to Mozambique
23 to 27 July 2023

Dear Members & Industry Stakeholders,

SAOGA, is planning an Oil, Gas and Energy focused Outward Mission to Mozambique the week of 23rd to 27th July 2023 (SAVE THE DATE). A draft programme and detail on the cost of the visit will be sent to our members closer to the middle of May 2023 but in the interim please diarise to join us on this exciting visit to explore business opportunities.

Mozambique LNG projects are still viable for South African companies due to the proximity, expertise, local content policies, market opportunities, and potential strategic partnerships. The projects present significant opportunities for South African companies to participate in a major infrastructure development programme and to generate economic benefits for both countries. The local content policy framework in Mozambique aims to improve local implementation of business ventures for local businesses.

The LNG projects (which develop gas fields in the Rovuma Basin off the coast of Mozambique and produce liquefied natural gas for export) represent a major investment into the country, estimated at $25 billion for Phase 1 (MLNG). Phase 1 involves the development of two liquefaction trains, with a total capacity of 12.88 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of LNG. The project partners are TotalEnergies, Mitsui E&P Mozambique Area1 Ltd., ONGC Videsh Ltd., Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd., PTT Exploration and Production Plc., and Oil India Ltd.

Phase 2 is the 18 MTPA 30bn USD Rovuma LNG project. More recently the project partners decided to switch to a modular construction method, which involves building the LNG facility in smaller modules at a fabrication yard and then transporting it to the project site for assembly. This method has several advantages, including; faster construction times, lower costs and reduced risks during transportation and installation. The switch to modular construction is expected to save time and money for the project, which is a major investment for Mozambique's economy and highlights the trend towards modularization in the LNG industry.

Area 4 have also developed the Mozambique Coral FLNG project, operational since November 2022
